Stepanakert, Nagorno Karabakh – 03/10/2013 – 04/10/2013
Dr Eleni Theocharous, Member of European Parliament for Cyprus and President of the EU-Armenia Friendship Group in the European Parliament has participated in a conference in the city of Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh. The conference was organised by various sponsors including the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), Yerevan State and Stepanakert State universities and other agencies and ministries. Its theme was aimed at analysing the conflicts in the Caucasus region and to assess options and strategies aimed at achieving peaceful settlement. The Nagorno-Karabakh Congress is celebrating twenty-five years since the revolution of the people of the region against the Soviet Government of Azerbaijan.
Dr Eleni Theocharous has a long lasting and sentimental relationship with the region of Nagorno-Karabakh due to her efforts when she served at various stages in her capacity as a Doctor during the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan from 1988-1994.
In relation to her visit Dr Theocharous states:
“I cannot deny that I feel deeply touched, because since then, from the early days of the revolution I was among those people, and I lived with them through the suspense and outcome of the rebellion that has evolved into a bloody war, and the busting of victory. It’s early fall here in the Caucasus, the scenery is gorgeous and peaceful, Stepanakert has become a great clean beautiful city and only those countless crosses in the cemetery of Heroes remind us of the evil that was done. During the war, thousands of souls perished between the millstones of death and thousands of young people died in the plight for self-determination, freedom and democracy this region enjoys today.”
